Sheffield Music Makers

Welcome

Welcome to the website of Sheffield Music Makers, one of the city’s oldest established choirs (founded in 1968 as Sheffield Teachers’ Choir).

On this page you will find a selection of photographs from our summer concert which was held at Bents Green Methodist Church, Ringinglow Road, Sheffield on Saturday 6th July.

The programme centrepiece consisted of a performance of The Sprig of Thyme, a selection of traditional songs from the British Isles arranged by Sir John Rutter, who was recently knighted in the King’s Birthday Honours, plus a smattering of ‘songs from the shows’ including familiar numbers from popular musicals Chicago, Les Miserables and The Lion King.

The conductor was Georgina Hulse, musical director of Sheffield Music Makers, with Graham Wilkinson on the piano and guest soloist Sarah Carroll.

We were delighted to perform in front of such a large and appreciative audience (despite the fact that our event clashed with a certain football match with England taking on Switzerland in the UEFA European Championships!)

We started the Autumn 2024 term by getting straight down to business preparing to sing at the David Clover Festival of Singing Annual Showcase Concert which also featured performances by Lodge Moor Children’s Choir and eight soloists who performed particularly well during the Festival Weekend earlier in the year. This concert took place at Holy Trinity Church, Millhouses, on Friday 27th September

And now our rehearsals take on a decidedly festive flavour as we concentrate on the Christmas carols and songs that we will be performing at various venues across the city over the festive season.

But before Christmas is upon us, we are also looking forward to our next Come and Sing Day on Saturday 2nd November at Bents Green Methodist Church. This will be a great opportunity to sing and socialise, as members and non-members of Sheffield Music Makers will learn the music from a selection of choruses from Handel’s Messiah during the morning and afternoon. At the end of the day we will have an informal performance.

New singers are always welcome, we rehearse every Thursday evening during school terms times at St Mary’s Church, Bramall Lane, Sheffield between 7pm and 9pm. Whether you used to be in a choir and want to re-engage, or you have never sung in a choir but always wanted to, now is the perfect time for new member to join us. You’ll be made very welcome, there are no auditions, sheet music is provided, sight reading is not essential, and the first term is free. What are you waiting for?

So come along and join us: see our joining page for more information on joining the choir.
